USO EMEA Announces 2024 Volunteer of Quarter 3

USO Europe, Middle East and Africa is excited to announce the 2024 Volunteer of the Quarter 3, Spc Onofrei Claudiu, a Romanian service member in Bemowo Piskie Training Area (BPTA), Poland.

Since he started volunteering in April of 2024, Claudiu has volunteered almost 900 hours at USO BPTA. Throughout Claudiu’s journey with the USO, he has demonstrated dedication in support of our mission: strengthening the well-being of the people serving in the military and their families. He has proven himself to be trustworthy, reliable, a great leader and committed to doing what is right.

“Spc Claudiu’s support as a USO volunteer while serving as a member of a NATO Battle Group is amazing,” said Director of Installation Management Command, Europe, Mr. Tommy Mize. “It’s a testament to his charter, spirit of selfless service and values. It also demonstrates the deep partnership, support and friendship of NATO forces. We thank Spc Claudiu for making such a positive impact in the lives of his fellow soldier.”

Claudiu helps manage daily tasks in the center like restocking the snack bar and keeping the kitchen clean, allowing USO staff members to focus on administrative duties. He then goes above and beyond, taking initiative on tasks like rearranging and repairing furniture to make sure it meets the needs of service members.

His leadership skills are highlighted as he trains and mentors other volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared for their new roles. The center recently faced some operational challenges due to being short-staffed, but since Claudiu joined the team, the center’s functionality has greatly improved.

“Claude exemplifies excellence and accountability through his unwavering dedication at the USO, where he consistently showed up with a smile, a helping hand and meticulous attention to detail,” said Center Operations Manager, Kevin Work.

His contributions went beyond the sheer number of hours he worked—surpassing all other volunteers combined—by actively supporting programs, managing closing shifts and even repairing furniture. His outstanding character and commitment to the USO’s success make him a deserving Volunteer of the Quarter and a valued friend.

Thanks to his organizational and logistical skills, Claudiu has made a meaningful impact on the programs and events at BPTA. He’s been an invaluable help during fun programs like karaoke, Texas Hold’Em tournaments and spa nights, where service members can unwind and de-stress. He’s also played a key role in important, large-scale events, such as organizing Independence Day celebrations that honor our nation with parades and festivities.

When people walk into a USO, our volunteers and staff strive to make it feel like a home away from home. Volunteers like Claudiu help turn that vision into reality. At deployed locations like BPTA, all our volunteers are full-time service members. In addition to their demanding duties, they generously dedicate their free time to supporting their fellow men and women in uniform.
